So here's what's been happening with me: I was going to the gym consistently, stretching, lifting heavy. I was doing all the right things. But every session, my hips were talking to me and my lower back was aching.
Not dramatic pain, just that background noise you learn to work around. That dull tightness when you first stand up from your desk.
The frustrating part? I wasn't doing anything wrong. I was actually trying.
I've been sitting at a desk for almost ten years now, working from home. My body was barely moving through its full range of motion, pretty much all day, and I didn't realize that was slowly changing everything below my waist.
The moment it clicked for me: It was when I noticed where the pain was actually coming from, my SI joint, where the lower back meets the pelvis. It would flare up after a desk day, or after a lifting day with back squats.
So I went looking for answers, and honestly, what I found changed how I train and how I train my clients.
Turns out the same chain keeps showing up in study after study: you sit, your hip flexors shorten, your pelvis pulls forward, and your glutes stop firing. Then your back picks up all the load it was never meant to carry. Your back isn't the cause here — it's the victim.
I tried the obvious stuff first. Stretching. Pigeon stretch. Hip flexor lunges. It helped for a minute, then the tightness came right back once I sat back down. I'd do glute bridges and still feel it everywhere except my glutes.
What actually worked was doing things in order: release what's overactive, reposition the pelvis, stabilize the right muscles, integrate the pattern into real movement, then reinforce it daily.
Skip a step and load too early, and you're just reinforcing the same compensation you're trying to break.
My back didn't get better because I stretched more. It got better because I stopped treating the symptom and started fixing the pattern underneath it.
If you've been stuck in that cycle — stretching, wondering why it keeps coming back, feeling glute work everywhere but your glutes, your back probably isn't the problem either.
Drop a comment and tell me where you feel it. That tells me exactly where to go next.
